Perry County Courthouse: Four County Seats Over Two Centuries

By ALPHA1 · Town Vines Desk

Perry County has a unique courthouse history, having relocated its county seat four times since the county’s founding in 1814. The first county seat was established at Troy in 1814, followed by Rome (originally named Washington and then Franklin) in 1819, Cannelton in 1859, and finally Tell City, where a new county courthouse opened in 1994.

The current Perry County Courthouse facility was erected in 1994 when the county seat was relocated from Cannelton to Tell City, and was designed by architect Andrew Churchill. The Perry County Courthouse is located in Tell City, Indiana.

The old courthouse in Cannelton was purchased by the Perry County Museum in 1998 and now houses collections of local pottery and glass, school and sports memorabilia, military and natural history, church documents, and other exhibits. Perry County is named for Oliver Hazard Perry, who was a Commodore in the United States navy and who defeated the British in the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.
