Winzerwald Winery, owned by Dan and Donna Adams, sits on 85 acres of rolling lands in the Hoosier National Forest along Interstate 64 in Perry County, about half an hour north of Tell City via SR 37. The winery’s name translates from German as “vintner of the forest”.
The winery celebrates Dan and Donna’s German heritage and the Swiss and German heritage of the area by offering unique German and Swiss-style wines, gifts, festivals, educational tours, and fun. Their great, great grandfather Jakob Loesch was a cooper (wine barrel maker) in Germany and brought wine grapes when he came to America in the 1800s, and these grapes still grow in the deep, fertile Ohio River Valley soils.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams each have certificates from Purdue University in both viticulture and enology, and Dan Adams previously worked for Wollersheim winery, the largest winery in Wisconsin. Winzerwald Winery is a founding and current member of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail and Grape Grower’s Cooperative, and Winzerwald and eight other wineries along the trail offer a passport program and year-round ticketed and non-ticketed events.
