Perched on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River near Cannelton, Blue Heron Winery offers visitors scenic views along southern Indiana’s border with Kentucky. The winery gets its name from the elegant blue herons often spotted along the nearby river and Deer Creek.
Founded by Gary and Lynn Dauby, who planted their first grapes in 1996 and earned their winemaking license in 2008, the winery crafts wines from estate and regionally-grown French hybrid and American varietals. Lynn, a Perry County art teacher for over 30 years, brings an artistic touch to the tasting room and gift shop, while Gary, an artist and biologist, tends the vineyards and helps craft the wines.
The property is home to what is believed to be the world’s largest in situ Celtic Cross, carved over two years by artist Greg Harris from a massive 24-foot sandstone boulder. The winery has a gift shop, tables for seating and a bar for tastings, plus a large porch with seating and views of the river. Blue Heron is a member of the Hoosier Wine Trail.
